When we give back to the community, we help the community become a better place. Giving back to the community can include volunteering time, donating skills, and many other helpful ways.
Here are some ways to give back to the community:
Helping a Neighbor
Maybe a neighbor is elderly or ill, offer to mow their lawn, shovel their sidewalks, or go to the grocery store for them. A neighbor might also need help like painting the outside of their home or other repair work.
Participate in a Community Garden
Community gardens are a great way to help any community. There is the planting, weeding, and harvesting of the vegetables. During the growing season, vegetables can be donated or taken to families that are in need of extra food.
Volunteering at Church
Many churches have food pantries where they hand out food on certain days. These churches need volunteers to not only pass out the food, but go to each store and pick up the food, sort it, and store it.
Donating Time at the Animal Shelter
Dogs need to be walked, fed and brushed. And sometimes they just need a friendly voice and a pat on the head. Animal shelters could also use help answering the phone or help at the counter.
Donating Skills
Volunteering to help others learn a second language, learn computer skills, do their taxes at tax time for free, or donating your expertise with free legal help are great ways to give back.
Planting a Tree
During the spring, many communities need new trees planted but don’t have the money to pay for this service. If not planting trees, there are hiking and biking trails that need to be cleared of debris and trash.
Volunteer at a Senior Center
Brighten up a senior’s day by playing a game of chess, backgammon, or cribbage. Just sitting there for a nice chat can help seniors from feeling left out, isolated or becoming depressed.
Helping With Charity Events
Charity events are always looking for people to help with hanging banners, distribute flyers, fundraising, and making phone calls.
Recycling
Sorting your trash for recycling or starting a compost pile is not only great for the community, but also for the environment.
